Depression is not just a sad feeling we experience every now and again. We all experience sadness at one time or another in our lives and these feelings will usually go away with time. Depression is more of an ongoing sadness, or an altered behavior in mood that persists for at least two weeks or more. Family and friends will usually notice if someone they know is affected by depression due to these altered states of behavior. Some of the most common symptoms that will be displayed are:
- Anxiety, sadness, emotional numbness for at least two weeks or longer
- Feelings of pessimism, guilt, hopelessness, helplessness, and worthlessness
- Disinterest in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed
- Low libido and loss of interest in sexual intercourse
- Chronic fatigue and low energy
- Difficulty making decisions
- Having a hard time with concentration and remembering things
- Sleeping disorders including insomnia and extended sleep periods
- Eating disorders including overeating and weight gain, or the opposite, having a poor appetite and weight loss
- Thoughts of death, deviant behavior, and suicide
- Irritability, acrimonious behavior, and restlessness
