Depression affects over 350,000,000 people throughout the world today. That is 5% of the world’s population. You are not alone in feeling the way that you do. Depression is quite a common affliction, with multiple variants and subtypes.
Here are a few of them:
Major Depressive Disorder (also known as Major Depression or Clinical Depression, this is classified as exhibiting at least 5 symptoms of depression lasting for two weeks or longer)
Subsyndromal Depression (less severe than Major Depressive Disorder, but shares the same symptoms for shorter periods of time)
Persistent Depressive Disorder (feelings of irritability or depression on most days for a year or more)
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) (the triggering of depression symptoms a week prior to a woman’s period)
Bipolar Depression (also know as Bipolar Disorder and Manic-Depressive-Illness, recognized as wide mood and energy swings. Women usually show depressive signs while men usually show more manic behavior)
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) (usually in children showing excessive temper tantrums and screaming, persistent angry and irritable moods, and the inability to get along with others)
Postpartum Depression (PPD) (also know as Perinatal Depression, effects not only women but men as well. Women are affected by their hormones, fatigue, and other factors, while men are affected by becoming a new parent and being overwhelmed, and adapting to the new lifestyle)
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) (also know as seasonal depression, will manifest in the fall and winter seasons. Sufferers will display mood changes, will overeating, gain weight, experience low energy, and become withdrawn from social interactions)
Substance-Induced Mood Disorder (this is depressive behavior brought on by substance abuse such as the abuse of alcohol, painkillers, and certain medicines that affect the central nervous system. Symptoms include anxiety, depression, and loss of interest in enjoyable activities)
Psychotic Depression (a type of depression that is accompanied by psychosis, for example, delusions or hallucinations that will occur during depressive episodes)
Illness Induced Depression (it is believed that certain severe diseases will cause the immune system to release certain chemicals to the brain, due to inflammation, and these chemicals can actually worsen or trigger depression in susceptible people)
